Inside The GPO 1916

£13.99

A gripping personal account of the revolutionary years 1916 to 1921.

This captivating journal of revolutionary Joe Good, written in 1946, vividly recounts his experiences of the 1916 Rising and the War Of Independence.

Born in London, Good became involved in the cause of Irish freedom as a boy, joining the Irish volunteers on the same day as Michael Collins. He took the ferry to Dublin in 1916, avoiding conscription into the Great War to fight for his 'land of dreams'. Good's recollections are packed with tales of steely nerves and daring exploits, along with intimate observations of many of the luminaries of the Rising, including Pearse, Connolly, Clarke, Fitzgerald, Macbride, MacDermott, Plunkett, Brugha, The O'Rahilly and Good's close friend Michael Collins.

Writing with wry, down to earth humour, Good remains throughout a detached and ironic observer of the rebellion. A modest man, he was persuaded by his son Maurice to write this unique record of Ireland's revolutionary years.
